Cadiz

I’ve been meaning to write this up for a while. For the last 10 days of my sabbatical I had always been planning to do some kind of break where I didn’t have to do anything. Wandering around Japan and cycling in Peru and the UK had taken it out of me so the plan was to do nothing at all. My friend Steve lives in Cadiz and I’d done a couple of day trips there before and it was ripe for a bit more of my attention.

It’s basically an old city surrounded by water on all sides, and then a new part which sort or sprawls along the coast. I based in Melting Pot Hostel which is pretty much in the center of the old city. Cadiz is great place to go and chill out for a few days. They have decent restaurants, a great beach, and a good nightlife. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Melting Pot Hostel. I was there for 9 nights, and by the end I started to feel like the Major from Faulty Towers, a resident. In the 9 days I was there I must have shared the 10 bed room with 30 people at least. Special note will go to the Dutch girls who seemed to be travelling with an entire H&M in their bags, and never stopped talking to each other. Pretty annoying! Another favourite was an Italian guy who got so burned the first day he was there he was in bed for about 3 days straight. It’s a decent hostel that offers a free breakfast, and my proudest moment there was coming back from a night out with Steve and being the first to have breakfast, just in time to go to bed for a few hours. I’m sure there must be clubs in the UK you can go to which are open to 8, but somehow rolling out to see the Cadiz docks in the light at that time was something special to me.

I can’t write anything about the touristic sites/sights of the place, I just relaxed for 10 days. I can recommend going there and hitting a cafe for brunch, then to the beach once the sun has cooled (3pm) and then to a bar on the beach for a beer and some calamari. If only they have jobs out there! It’s a paradise. Oh and sorry to say this, but another bonus, not many British people there.
